The University and Portland City Council have reached an agreement regarding the wording of the White Stag sign on the University’s satellite campus building in Portland.
The sign, which currently says “Made in Oregon,” will simply say “Oregon” after the University purchases it, University representative for advancement in Portland Jan Oliver said Wednesday. Previously, University administrators had been pushing the City Council and Portland’s Landmarks Commission to allow the sign to say, “University of Oregon.”
In addition, the logo on the bottom of the sign, which currently has a red oval with the words “Old Town” written over it in yellow, will be changed, Oliver said.
The oval will now be green and the words will say, “Old Town Portland.” The words will still be yellow.
In addition, the City Council voted Wednesday morning to remove the ordinance to condemn the sign, Oliver said. The city will not buy the sign from Ramsay Signs, she said. Rather, the University will purchase it.
Oliver said she did not know how much the sign would cost or when the purchasing process would end. The new wording change will open the sign topic up to more public forums and discussion.
The University is happy with the wording compromise, Oliver said.
“We are pleased,” she said. “It’s a good resolution to the challenge.”
