The Oregon javelin throwers continue to impress after two individual victories in the men’s and women’s javelin at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn.
Senior Rachel Yurkovich had to wait three hours and 30 minutes Friday to begin competing due to thunderstorms, but her season-best throw of 190 feet provided the fireworks. An inch off her personal best and school and Pacific-10 Conference record, Yurkovich’s throw broke Olympian Kim Kreiner’s meet record at LaPorte Stadium and Moravian College’s Christina Scherwin’s collegiate record. Scherwin is now a volunteer assistant coach of the Oregon javelin throwers.
Redshirt junior Alex Wolff, competing on Saturday, threw 231 feet to beat his opposition by 18 feet. Wolff’s mark is three feet shy of his new personal best of 234-4, set at the Pepsi Team Invitational last week.
Senior Ashley McCrea, the third and final member of the Ducks’ contingent, finished in fourth place with a throw of 142 feet, 11 inches.
