The Oregon men’s golf team finished second overall during this weekend’s 2009 NCAA West Regional tournament at the Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, Calif.
The No. 35 Ducks, who finished in second place at last year’s regional tournament, had three golfers place in the top 10, but they couldn’t quite catch No. 14 Arizona State University, which took the team title with a three-round score of 828.
Freshman Eugene Wong had an exceptional third round to finish in a tie for fifth place overall. Wong converted two eagles and three birdies over a nine-hole stretch on the final day to seal his place on the leader board. He ended the tournament with a score of 208, only four strokes behind the leader.
Following closely behind were freshman Daniel Miernicki and sophomore Isaiah Telles, who finished in ties for seventh and 10th, respectively. Miernicki moved up three places with his final round of 3-under 69, while Telles’ big round came on the second day, when he shot 5-under 67.
Freshman Robbie Ziegler finished in 12th place for the tournament, while sophomore Jack Dukeminier rounded out the Ducks’ scoring as he finished in 51st.
ASU’s Jesper Kennegard took home the individual title, while his teammates Knut Borsheim and Chan Kim finished in a tie for third place.
Oregon will now look ahead to the NCAA Championships at the Inverness Golf Course in Toledo, Ohio, beginning May 27.
