ASUO President-elect Emma Kallaway selected one of her top campaign advisers to be her chief of staff.
Ella Barrett will serve as a senior policy adviser to Kallaway and Vice President-elect Getachew Kassa.
Kallaway said she and Kassa selected Barrett because of her management background and experience working for previous executives. Barrett served as marketing director to 2007-08 President Emily McLain, and served in several roles early in the administration of President Sam Dotters-Katz.
Kallaway said she would like to continue working with others who were not selected to be chief of staff.
Sen. Carina Miller, a former presidential candidate who applied to be chief of staff, said applying for the job was hard despite the full hiring process that took place. “Everyone I knew who was involved or had anything to do with the ASUO knew it was going to be Ella,” Miller said.
“I’m very disappointed with the way things turned out because I don’t think it was fair,” she said. Miller said she could have accomplished more as chief of staff than in other executive staff positions and likely would not apply for another.
“I would feel comfortable being appointed to a vacant Senate seat,” she said.
