Eugene businesses are gearing up for the 2009 Business Commute Challenge, which motivates businesses and their employees to reduce their carbon footprint by using alternative forms of transportation. The event has been sponsored by Commuter Solutions at Lane Transit District for 10 years.
At least seventy businesses have already signed up on the new event Web site commutechallenge.org, which will track all event data. Paul Adkins, the Business Commute Challenge coordinator, said that past participants reported continuing the use of their transportation methods even after the challenge was over.
The event was developed in an effort to reduce carbon emissions and congestion, and increase personal and community health. Registered businesses and individuals are eligible to win prizes, including bagel breakfasts, tickets to local events, Amtrak tickets to Seattle or Portland and various gift certificates.
Following the week-long challenge, an awards luncheon on Tuesday, May 19 will recognize challenge winners and runners-up.
