The University Senate requested Wednesday that the administration establish an online budget reporting system by November 15.
The Senate unanimously passed a resolution by biology professor Nathan Tublitz that would establish a line-by-line expenditure report on the Web, similar to one used at Oregon State University.
Initially, Tublitz’s resolution said the Senate “directs” the administration have the system in place by September 1. Senate Vice President Peter Gilkey said the Senate does not have the capacity to direct the administration and asked the language be changed to “respectfully requests.” He also asked the deadline be changed to “as expeditiously as possible.”
Chief Information Officer Don Harris said September 1 was too soon to accomplish the task of creating an entire database of line-by-line expenditures. Creating the system would take 8 to 10 weeks and likely cost more than $20,000, he said. Law professor John Bonine said he wanted to set a certain date by which the administration should create such a system and proposed November 15, which Tublitz accepted.
The Senate also passed a resolution endorsing tuition equity. ASUO President Sam Dotters-Katz presented the resolution, which would allow students who have a high school diploma or equivalent and have lived in Oregon for at least five years but lack legal documentation to pay in-state tuition. The resolution states the Senate’s support for a bill in the Oregon Legislature which would do the same. The ASUO Senate recently passed a similar resolution.
University President Dave Frohnmayer announced that three faculty members had been given distinguished teaching awards. Environmental studies professor Alan Dickman, sociology professor Michael Dreiling and business instructor David Dusseau each received $2,000 for demonstrating excellence in teaching. Award recipients are chosen on the recommendation of faculty and students, according to a statement from the University.
