The Indigo goes metal and takes its cues from Samurai Duck this weekend with one local thrash band after another.
The show kicks off with heavy riffs, heavy beats and diabolic roars from Only Nightmares.
Although the band has its fair share of typical diehard numbers like “Hell in Human Flesh,” Only Nightmares reveals a more sophisticated tone. A warped bass calms to a tribal rhythm and political lyrics. “Millions of Americans suffer from this,” they sing.
Next, the two-piece Athiarchists, “heavier and harder than most four-piece bands,” conjure raw hardcore energy, with offensive lyrics that contrast traditional incomprehensible sounds with seemingly a form of rapping.
Influenced by the Eugene Police Department and the seat belt law, the Athiarchists are constantly on the road throughout the West Coast. The Athiarchists’ MySpace page describes it as “the band that shows up at the last minute because another band dropped out. They only play music because they live for it.”
Staunch supporters of Second Amendment rights, We Have Guns is reminiscent of the constant threat of the rising dead. The zombie-movie and beer-inspired hardcore band has awed Eugene audiences for more than a decade, especially its lead guitarist and 101.5 KFLY radio show host Tobby Lugo.
With its punk elements and anthemic backup vocals, the We Have Guns motto is “we play loud music loudly.”
Closing at Indigo will be the female-fronted Pantheon, which is cleaner but just as heavy. Hailing from Cottage Grove, Pantheon is working on new sounds after completing its 2008 E.P., “From the Ashes.”
The show starts at 6 p.m. and the Indigo is located at 1290 Oak St.
