While I don’t object to the question being put to C.J. Ciaramella’s integrity, the answer that the Emerald editorial staff has come up with leads one to question their own journalistic diligence.
For reasons unknown to me, ASUO President Sam Dotters-Katz approached Ciaramella to offer the Senate appointment. It is to his credit that Ciaramella accepted the offer in the manner that he did. Ciaramella pursued the appointment with an up-front and dedicated commitment to the standards of satire, sarcasm and parody that have made the Commentator a nationally recognized publication.
As if to say, “If you want the editor in chief of the Commentator, here he is!” Ciaramella’s integrity shows true in his unwillingness to take on the “serious” attitude deemed appropriate by current ASUO members. After considering him, the ASUO decided thanks, but no thanks.
On the surface it did seem out of place the EIC of the Commentator was out for a Senate seat. But with a little understanding of who and what makes the Commentator what it is, the editorial staff could have answered the integrity question correctly.
