Campaign Oregon squashes fundraising goal
More than 90,000 donors raised a total of $853 million, making Campaign Oregon the most successful private fundraising campaign in state history. Amid a financial crisis, fewer and fewer students can set aside funds to attend school, which in turn translates to lower revenues for the University and an overall lack of funding for our programs. Thanks to these donors, the University will be better able to suit the needs of future generations of students.
ASUO travel budget shifted to student programs
In a time when funding for education institutions is so scarce, large universities need all the money they can muster. ASUO President Sam Dotters-Katz rerouted transportation money to lessen the burden of paying for student programs next year. Despite the possible lack of University representation at student association conferences, in the long run, this extra bevy of funds should improve the availability and quality of student programs.

Dick Cheney defends Guantanamo
Dick Cheney continues, even in retirement, to be Dick Cheney. Cheney reminded an interviewer that 61 of the recently released Guantanamo Bay detainees have returned to terrorism. Nevermind that the “61 terrorists” myth has been roundly debunked as false. Mr. Cheney, it seems, still is not aware of the Constitution’s stance on cruel and unusual punishment, nor the importance of adhering to the document that makes our country what it is. Good riddance.
Oregon recession deepens
The University’s Index of Economic Indicators, used to measure the state’s economic health, dropped to a 12-year low. This poses a number of problems for students: less state revenue to fund the University, more trouble finding jobs in school and after graduation, and more difficulty obtaining affordable loans. We hope politicians and business leaders take the moves necessary to provide long-neglected economic infrastructure and get us back on the road to economic recovery.
