There was a letter published in the Emerald on Monday titled, “Students need to cover coughing, especially in face of H1N1 pandemic.” In addition to covering your coughs to prevent the spread of H1N1, I would urge everyone to wash their hands after you use the restroom, please.
We should not only practice this because of the threat of H1N1, but it should be something we practice often; in fact, we should do this as often as we walk into the restroom. Do I sound like an idiot? I probably do because this should be something that everyone should do without question and I believe that most readers do.
However, throughout my three years at this University, I am shocked and honestly, kind of repulsed at the number of people who walk out of a stall and out the door without washing their hands. Ladies, I’m talking to you. I don’t have significant experience using men’s restrooms, however, I have much experience using the women’s restroom and I’ve seen it happen more than once this year alone! This makes me not want to let anyone borrow a pencil in class, which would be rude, especially if I have an extra one, right? And not having a pencil during class sucks!
Well, I don’t want someone’s nasty hands touching my pencil. It’s gross, unsanitary, and if you’d be embarrassed by people finding out you don’t wash your hands after you use the bathroom, then you’d better start. Why do I even have to write this? This is the stupidest thing I’ve done all week. I’m writing to the Emerald urging people to wash their hands after using the restroom! This is ridiculous! Ridiculous yes, but it’s necessary. Wash your hands, people.
