I realize many of you in attendance of the USC vs. Oregon game did not actually go to U of O (or any college for that matter), but the level of class in Autzen Stadium was still astonishingly low on Halloween. Yes, I was one of the four SC fans not sitting in the designated SC section, and there were moments when I thought I would be socked in the face à la LeGarrette Blount for applauding a USC touchdown.
Did I expect courteous hospitality? Not at all. I live in Seattle and have heard all the stories from Husky fans. I expected passionate, loud, and rowdy, but at least intelligent football fans. What I experienced were loud, delusional, insecure, and offensive fans.
As a Trojan, I have seen a lot of opponents lose, many of them sore about it. I had never seen sore winners until I visited Autzen. It was clear to me that you are not quite sure how to experience such a huge win. As the fourth quarter dragged on, I thought the atmosphere would change from hostility to elation. Nope. It was truly sad to watch fans angrily walk out of the stadium still looking for a fight. You won — enjoy it. And by enjoy it, I do not mean storm the field. You storm the field after major upsets or national titles — not when your team is ranked four spots behind in the polls and 3-point underdogs.
I saw your Code of ConDuckt posted throughout the stadium and thought that it simply must have been ignored by careless fans. That was until I was approached by a Duck fan who said, “YOU CAN’T SPELL SUN BOWL WITHOUT U-S-C!”
Perhaps your fans are illiterate?
