With the end of the term approaching, we take a look at some of the stories making headlines at other schools around the Pacific-10 Conference.
Arizona
The Wildcat football team won in the closing seconds against Arizona State in the annual rival game to give Arizona a 7-4, 5-3 record going into the final game of the season against the USC Trojans. It was a gutsy performance for the Wildcats, who are still in doubt about where they will finish in the Pac-10. Numerous scenarios place Arizona anywhere from second place to sixth place depending on the outcome of the Trojans game on Saturday.
Arizona State
On Nov. 20, ASU baseball coach Pat Murphy resigned as the head coach. He’s been named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year the last three years and has led the Sun Devils to a 629-284-1 record over the last 15 years and four appearances in the College World Series. There were no reasons for the abrupt resignation.
California
The Golden Bears tallied their school-record eighth straight trip to the NCAA volleyball tournament on Sunday. They were given the No. 9 overall seed because of their 11-7 Pac-10 record. Cal plays Atlantic Sun Conference champ Lipscomb in the first round. The Golden Bears are just one of eight Pac-10 teams selected to the tournament. Oregon is the No. 14 overall seed.
Stanford
The biggest thing in Stanford athletics isn’t the volleyball team making the NCAA tournament, or the football team beating Notre Dame — it’s Tiger Woods and his recent drama. He was inducted into the Stanford Hall of Fame at halftime of the Stanford-Cal game on Nov. 21. Then, on Nov. 27, he got into a highly publicized car wreck in his gated community after crashing into a fire hydrant and a tree. The details of why he crashed are the gossip of choice around the nation right now.
UCLA
Head football coach Rick Neuheisel said Sunday there was nothing wrong with the last minute touchdown pass USC threw against the Bruins in USC’s 28-7 win Saturday. Neuheisel had called a timeout after the Trojans had kneeled with 54 seconds left and the score at 21-7. Trojan coach Pete Carroll decided to go for the deep ball after the timeout instead of kneeling, and it cleared both sidelines.
USC
The 2008 NCAA National Champion Trojan water polo team earned the No. 1 seed in the 2009 NCAA tournament after going 24-2 this year. The tournament is a four-team tournament and this year it is being hosted by Princeton. Competition starts this Saturday with the Trojans playing No. 4 Princeton.
Oregon
Ticket prices are soaring for the 113th edition of the Civil War football game, to be hosted on Thursday in Eugene. Last Friday, the Oregon Department of Justice issued a warning to fans from buying counterfeit tickets because of the high demand. A few posts on Craigslist had ads for tickets for $150 and up.
Oregon State
Over the weekend, the Beavers had the No. 1 basketball fan in the country at their game against George Washington on Nov. 28. President Barack Obama was in attendance at the game in Washington D.C. to cheer on his brother-in-law, Beaver head coach Craig Robinson. The Beavers won for President Obama by a score of 64-57. The Beavers had toured the White House and met the president the day before.
Washington
The Husky volleyball team fell from grace a bit in the last week. It was leading the entire year until an upset loss to the Oregon Ducks. Stanford used the opportunity to sneak into first place with a 14-4 record to Washington’s 13-5 final conference record. But the NCAA tournament still bestowed a sixth-overall seed on the team.
Washington State
Staying on the volleyball note, the Cougars punched their first ticket to the NCAA tournament since the 2002 season. Washington State started off the season strong, however, the team faded down the stretch, finishing with a 6-12 record in conference play. But the selection committee rewarded Washington State’s undefeated non-conference record with an at-large berth.
