Police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a suspect in an assault incident that occurred early Saturday near campus.
Officers said a local homeless man was walking near East Broadway and High Street when he was lit on fire by an unknown attacker early Saturday morning.
The victim was walking near East Broadway and High Street when he heard footsteps, a police news release stated. He said he was bumped into, heard the sound of fire igniting and, before he could react, was aflame.
After putting the fire out, the man went to the nearby Campus Inn for help.
He was treated for non–life-threatening burns on his hands and face at a local hospital, police reported.
Police are asking anyone with information on the attack to call Detective Tony Veach at (541) 682-5172.
The incident is only the latest in a string of violent attacks against the homeless. So far, two homeless people have been the victims of homicide incidents this year in Eugene.
