Sen. Nick Gower was named Student Senate president Wednesday night, beating political opponent Nick Schultz, who shortly thereafter became Gower’s vice president.
“We have the capability to do a lot of really great things,” Gower said in his opening speech before elections were cast. “I love discussing. I argue myself in debate.”
The Senate also confirmed a member for each of its remaining leadership positions — Sen. Lyzi Diamond became the treasurer, Sen. Alex McCafferty the ombudsperson and Sen. Amanda Hilts the academic chair.
Aside from Gower, each of the five was confirmed without opposition and without the newly sworn president even counting the votes. Gower will be responsible for setting the agenda and running Senate meetings, and is the third in line for the position of ASUO president after the president and vice president.
The Senate also confirmed a flurry of nominees for various positions from Kallaway, all unanimously. Former Sens. Carina Miller and Hailey Sheldon were reappointed to new seats. Law students Casey King, Casey E.R. Sanders and Andrae Washington took positions on the ASUO Constitution Court. Three nominees for ASUO committees — former candidate Devon Duquette and Kallaway campaign volunteers Alison Brown and Ben Eckstein — will also take seats.
The meeting lasted nearly five hours and saw the Senate also disbursing large sums to projects that included bringing free copies of the New York Times back to campus and keeping the Knight Library open around the clock starting in the third week of fall term.
