Arizona State (2-2 overall, 0-1 Pacific-10 Conference) at Washington State (1-4, 0-3) (2 p.m.)
Things can only look up for Washington State this Saturday after the 52-6 shellacking they took at the hands of Oregon last weekend. The Cougars totaled only 158 yards on offense while giving up 514 to the Ducks, 318 of which were on the ground. True freshman quarterback Jeff Tuel did not last long in his first ever start, completing only one of two passes for three yards before leaving the game with a hip injury. The Sun Devils also suffered a demoralizing loss 28-17 last week at home against Oregon State. Quarterback Danny Sullivan threw for 338 yards and a touchdown, but it was not enough to overcome a 21-3 halftime deficit. Arizona State ran for only 68 total yards and sloppy play lead to ten team penalties. Among the few bright spots in the game for the Sun Devils was wide receiver Chris McGaha, who hauled in 15 catches for a career high 165 yards.
Key Stat: Last year, Washington State managed only seven rushing yards in a 31-0 loss to Arizona State.
Stanford (4-1, 3-0) at Oregon State (3-2, 1-1) (4 p.m.)
After an impressive 24-16 win against UCLA, the Cardinal is still undefeated in Pacific-10 Conference play. Fresh off of a 200-yard day against Washington, Cardinal running back Toby Gerhart’s encore was just as impressive against the Bruins. The senior ran for 134 yards and accounted for all three of Stanford’s touchdowns. The Bruins found the end zone only once on a one-yard Johnathan Franklin run, with the rest of their points coming on Kai Forbath field goals. Oregon State comes into this week with their heads held high after a much-needed win against Arizona State. Beaver running back Jacquizz Rodgers ran for two touchdowns, and quarterback Sean Canfield threw for two more. Wide receiver James Rodgers added ten catches for 114 yards and a touchdown.
Key Stat: Gerhart torched the Beavers in a 36-28 win last year, carrying the ball 19 times for 147 yards and two touchdowns.
Arizona (3-1, 1-0) at Washington (2-3, 1-0) (7 p.m.)
Feeling rejuvenated after a bye week, Arizona heads into this week with confidence after a narrow 37-32 win against Oregon State on Sept. 26. Sophomore Nick Foles’ first start as quarterback for the Wildcats was a memorable one as he threw for 254 yards and three touchdowns against the Beavers. The Huskies, on the other hand, have not won since their shocking upset of USC. Their most recent defeat came last weekend in overtime at Notre Dame. Washington quarterback Jake Locker threw for 281 yards and ran for a touchdown, and running back Chris Polk added 136 yards on the ground. In the end, it was Fighting Irish quarterback Jimmy Clausen who had the last word. Down 27-22 with three minutes left in the game, Clausen led a five-play drive and connected with tight end Kyle Rudolph for a 12-yard touchdown. After a successful two-point conversion attempt, the Fighting Irish led 30-27 with 1:20 left. Still, the Huskies were not finished and tied the game at the end of regulation with a 37-yard field goal. In overtime, Notre Dame struck first with a one-yard touchdown run from Robert Hughes. The Huskies failed to answer and suffered their third loss of the year by a score of 37-30.
Key Stat: Quarterback Jake Locker has either thrown or run for at least one touchdown in each of Washington’s first five games.
