ASUO Sen. Christina Ergas resigned Thursday, less than two months after taking office.
“I was recently informed that my job will require double the time commitment than I had originally anticipated,” Ergas wrote in an e-mail sent to ASUO Sen. Nick Gower, the Summer Senate Chair, and ASUO President Emma Kallaway. “In light of this news, I will not be able to fulfill my senatorial duties.”
Ergas, a doctoral student in sociology, is a graduate teaching fellow and a shop steward in the Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation, a union that represents GTFs. She was elected in April to represent graduate and law students on the Senate.
The ASUO has struggled recently to involve graduate students. Ergas ran unopposed and was elected with only 75 votes, while no one even ran for her seat in 2008. Kallaway still has not filled the graduate and law advocate position on her own staff.
Ergas’ seat will be open until Kallaway appoints and the Senate votes to confirm a replacement.
