Last winter we began switching our delivery vehicles from student’s cars to bicycles and trailers. We started with a couple of students using their own trailers, and their work proved to our distribution manager that the campus routes could actually be done faster on bikes.
Using about 65% of the $5,200 mileage reimbursement we purchased a custom-made tri-hauler and three custom-built bike trailers that could hold the weight of multiple bundles of newspapers.
With the help of this new equipment, we are able to say that, since the beginning of winter term, the ODE is delivered 100% by bicycle riders. The annual cost of bike and trailer maintenance is projected to be about 1/4 of what we previously paid drivers for mileage reimbursement.
The new system has made reliable student workers easier to find and gives a great opportunity for some early morning exercise!
