Junior outside hitter Heather Meyers is the Athlete of the Week for her performance so far this season. She is leading the Ducks in total points with 82 and service aces with 24. Meyers is hitting .400 and has 50 kills, third best on the team behind seniors Sonja Newcombe and Neticia Enesi. She had a season-high 13 kills against San Francisco on Aug. 28, and the Daily Emerald recently caught up with her.
Oregon Daily Emerald: If you weren’t playing volleyball, what sport would you
be playing?
Heather Meyers: I started off as a baton twirler; I did it for six years, so I’d probably still be doing it. But another sport I really like is tennis. I really enjoy it. I’d try it out.
ODE: What’s your major?
HM: Sociology and I’m minoring in special education.
ODE: Are you on track to graduating or early?
HM: I might end up finishing a term early, but I don’t care. I’m staying. And I don’t mind that because of the recession. I’ll redshirt if I have to! Well, not really, but still. It’s rough out there.
ODE: What do you plan on doing with your degree?
HM: Hopefully I get into the education graduate program. My advisor told me to try a different route to get in besides majoring in education. She said that the program takes other majors sometimes too, so I’m going to try that out and see where it takes me. I’ve always wanted to be a teacher.
ODE: What age level?
HM: Elementary school. Not middle school. I like high school, but definitely not middle school. I like working with little kids. Even if it doesn’t mean teaching, I’d like to be around them. Coaching maybe.
ODE: What is it like playing in front of a packed crowd?
HM: Awesome. The adrenaline is pumping and it’s always exciting. We always get a decent crowd compared to other places we play. And it feels like the crowd is right next to you. It’s very small and compact.
ODE: What’s the feeling when you put the ball on the floor for a big point in a big game?
HM: It’s indescribable. You get this rush and it just feels amazing. The feeling of it is just great to know that you were able to put the ball away. It’s just awesome.
