The date for spring commencement in 2010 has again changed, marking the third time the event’s date has moved. The main ceremony will now take place Monday, June 14, 2010, which a University administrator said will help ensure family members can find hotel rooms.
The ceremony was originally slated for June 12, but administrators moved it to June 5 to accommodate the 2010 NCAA Track and Field Championships, which will take place at Hayward Field on June 9–12. The change drew criticism from students, faculty and observers because it required students to walk in the ceremony before final exams for spring term 2010.
Early in July 2009, shortly after Richard Lariviere became the new University president, administrators decided to move the ceremony back to June 12, a change they said owed to the possibility that the NCAA might shorten its championship, relaxing concerns about hotel availability.
University Provost Jim Bean announced the newest decision in an e-mail sent to faculty Monday. (Read the e-mail here.)
He said the decision was part of an effort to revamp the final commencement ceremony.
“People for the most part like their individual department or school commencement,” Bean said. “In the past we felt that we would like to have more attendance and more glitz at the main commencement and have that be more of a must-see event.”
Under the new schedule, ceremonies for some small departments will begin as early as Thursday, June 10. Larger schools may have their individual ceremonies on June 13, while the school-wide commencement will take place Monday. Bean said no events will take place June 12.
Bean also said the date for commencement will not change again, while no individual ceremony is likely to move within the schedule by more than half an hour.
