This weekend’s Washington trip may have been the most successful for the Oregon women this century.
Junior guard Taylor Lilley scored a game-high 20 points and pulled down a season-high six rebounds as the Ducks (7-9, 4-2 Pacific-10 Conference) started strong against the Washington State Cougars (8-8, 1-4) and never let up, winning 57-41 on Saturday afternoon.
Oregon, which has won four of its past five games, swept the Washington road series for the first time since the 1999-2000 season and also won three straight road games for the first time since that same season, when it won five in a row.
The Ducks’ sixth consecutive win against the Cougars boosts them up to fourth in the Pac-10 standings, behind Cal – the conference’s only undefeated team – Stanford and Arizona State. The Sun Devils also maintain a 4-2 conference
record, but their win over the Ducks on Jan. 10 and better overall record allows them the third-place spot.
Junior guard Micaela Cocks scored 11 points for the Ducks, and sophomore forward Ellie Manou had a 10-point, seven-rebound performance in 21 minutes off the bench. Freshman forward Amanda Johnson led all players with nine rebounds and five assists, despite scoring just two points.
Cougars guard April Cook was the only WSU player with a double-figure scoring total, putting up 12 points. Guard Jazmine Perkins had eight points and eight rebounds.
Washington State shot 29.5 percent for the game to Oregon’s 41 percent. The Ducks also did a better job of spreading the ball around, with 12 assists to the Cougars’ eight.
The Ducks began the game on a 6-0 run that forced Washington into an early timeout 93 seconds into the game. With four points scored in the final 23 seconds, Oregon found itself ahead 34-22 at halftime, the largest lead at intermission this season.
Washington State could not get back into the game in the second half, as Oregon never once let its lead slip below double digits. After a layup by Jessica Oestricher cut the Ducks’ lead to 50-39 with 5:15 remaining, Lilley responded with five straight points and freshman forward Jasmin Holliday converted a layup to make up a 7-2 Oregon run to end the game.
Oregon sophomore center Nicole Canepa missed her sixth consecutive game Saturday with a right ankle injury, and it is unknown if she will be available against the Bay Area schools this week.
