The Multicultural Center will host a rally to show solidarity with Palestinian civilians today in the EMU Amphitheater from noon to 3 p.m.
In light of the recent escalation of violence in the Gaza Strip along the Mediterranean Sea, student leaders from the University have decided to hold a demonstration to publicly speak out against the fighting and bring a greater awareness to students on campus.
The rally will feature guest speakers, including community activists, professors and staff members to promote a variety of opinions.
Event organizers hope to encourage students to take a stand and realize that indiscriminate violence is an ineffective way to solve problems in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Rally coordinator and University sophomore Beshara Kehdi feels strongly that the Palestinian civilians affected by the violence deserve the same opportunities that people elsewhere enjoy.
“We’re trying to make a statement to the University that we’re here for the Gaza civilians and we haven’t forgotten them,” he said.
Though there have been similar events in Eugene, this is the first campus rally recognizing the recent escalation of violence in the Gaza Strip.
Kehdi encourages students from all backgrounds to attend the rally, regardless of their political beliefs.
“It’s a humanitarian crisis and no matter your political ideology, you have to recognize that this is a problem,” he said.
