As the summer draws near, students are beginning to feel anxious about their plans and opportunities to make money while gaining experience.
To ease these anxieties, the Career Center is hosting the 2008-09 Winter Internship Fair today in the EMU Concourse from noon to 4 p.m. According to Colleen Lewis, events coordinator for the Career Center, this 32-booth recruiting event is the largest of the term.
“The companies should be there all day,” Lewis said. “Sometimes they start to leave early, but they’ll be there long enough for students to talk to the different companies.”
Not all internships are the same, Lewis emphasized. Compensation can range from pay to credit to nothing, and they aren’t always in the summer.
“Winter is traditionally the time that companies look for their summer interns,” said Lewis. “However, the internships all vary in length.”
Between the companies, there are 50 positions to be filled, according to Lewis. Students should be prepared with a resume and be willing to set up an interview immediately.
“A paid internship would be nice for the money,” said Ana Choban, a University freshman who plans to attend the fair. “But mostly, I need to build my resume. I have a summer job already, but I need something other than that.”
Companies registered to attend include Disney Theme Parks, the City of Eugene and ShelterCare, among others.
