Kari Herinckx, vice president of the University’s Black Student Union, is still wrapping her mind around this Tuesday and its historical profoundness.
“I would say that we’ve come full circle but we still have a lot of work to do,” Herinckx said about Martin Luther King, Jr. Day coinciding with President-elect Barack Obama’s inauguration. “As black women, we have a place in that.”
Tuesday the BSU will help host the MLK Unity Celebration. The inauguration will be played live at 9 a.m. and replayed at noon and 3 p.m. in the Fishbowl, Buzz Café and The Break.
At 6 p.m., the unity celebration will commence with inauguration highlights and recaps. Attendees are invited to eat cake and light refreshments. The University Gospel Choir will perform at 7 p.m., and the day will conclude with the 7:30 p.m. candlelight vigil at the EMU amphitheater.
Other local MLK events begin this weekend and conclude Wednesday, Jan. 28.
