University senior Adam Wayne Klunder was arrested Wednesday night in connection to a string of burglaries that occurred during winter break, according to a Eugene Police Department press release.
Klunder has been charged with one count of burglary in the first degree, according to the release. He was released from custody late Wednesday. As of 4:30 p.m. Thursday, the district attorney’s office had not received record of the case from EPD and could not confirm the charges.
Klunder could not be reached for comment.
Information from burglary victims led to Klunder’s arrest on Wednesday night. The EPD Crimes Unit discovered a number of items at Klunder’s E. 14th Avenue apartment that police believe were stolen during recent burglaries. Police found several flat screen televisions, laptops and iPods, according to an EPD press release. Using the serial numbers on the items and the descriptions victims have provided, officers believe Klunder could have been involved in as many as 20 other burglaries, said Eugene Police Department spokeswoman Jenna LaBounty.
“From what I’ve heard from officers, Klunder’s not being that incredibly cooperative right now,” LaBounty said. “Last I heard he had indicated that he was involved in at least one burglary. Officers working on the case have told me that additional charges are forthcoming.”
When Klunder was arrested, he identified himself as a University senior with a full academic scholarship, according to the news release. Because of confidentiality protocol, the University would not confirm if Klunder has a scholarship.
“In general, scholarship criteria is set by the source of the funds, and most do not specify criminal records in any capacity,” University spokeswoman Julie Brown said. “In such a case, it would be up to the donor to decide whether or not to continue the scholarship.”
EPD is contacting victims to return stolen property recovered at Klunder’s residence.
