University student Alex Horwitch was on hand for Oregon’s opening press conference at Disneyland on Dec. 26. Here’s a post he sent the Emerald:
The fight song played, the fans went wild, and Chip Kelly criticized the most famous mouse in the world for not being his feathered counter-part. “Sorry Mickey. I’m a Duck fan!”
Disneyland hosted the annual Rose Bowl Kick-Off on Saturday, Dec. 26 and the Ohio State Buckeyes got an early glimpse of what will be one of the main factors going into the Rose Bowl.
“I love our fans,” Coach Kelly said. “I think our fans are the greatest in college football.”
Recreating the Autzen atmosphere will obviously be a difficult task, but the team is confident that the Ducks fans will come out in full support and provide that extra push towards Rose Bowl victory.
“We did it last year at the Holiday Bowl. Up and down the West Coast is home field turf for us,” Walter Thurmond said. “It’s like a home game for us and everyone is just taking it in.”
Jordan Holmes had similar feelings.
“We are the West Coast representatives. We’re the home team, so hopefully we can get a few more Ducks fans in there…and it will be to our benefit.”
Both the Oregon Ducks and Ohio State Buckeyes got to spend time with their teammates and families at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, Calif. After the press conference, the teams and coaching staff were given the opportunity to go throughout both Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure. While some players joked around with each other and visited the parks, the trip was made very special for those with their families present.
“It’s the first time for my wife, and I know she’s excited about it,” Will Tukuafu said.
And while the teams were there to relax and have some fun, they still understood the reason behind the trip. Holmes said the Disneyland trip was a slight distraction.
“At the end of the day…it’s a business trip,” he said. “It’s distracting at times but we are here to play football, and that’s what we’re going to do.”
