The Oregon coaches want to see intensity and intelligence from the players during the spring game. It is no definite statement on who will become starters, and we won’t know the players who will be stars come fall. However, it is another opportunity for coaching. For the players, the spring game is a fun way to end weeks of practice.
“We are definitely ready to show what we’ve been working on these past three, four weeks,” sophomore linebacker Troy Dye said.
Despite the new coaching staff, the spring game will follow a similar style to previous years. Two assistant coaches were picked out of a hat to lead each side. Each will build his teams using a draft format. On Saturday, the two teams face-off in a scrimmage. It’s simple but effective. The coaches competitive nature has been on display all week as the competitive trash talk has been nonstop.
“They’re super hyped,” wide receiver Darren Carrington said. “They’re definitely talking more trash than us. It’s good to see how fired up they are for this season.”
Strategically, the coaches will keep the spring game fairly straightforward in terms of play-calling. The coaches said it’s important that the game isn’t complicated so the players can enjoy themselves and fully display their talent.
“I don’t think you’re going to see a lot in the spring game,” defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt said. “You want [the players] to play with passion. You want them to enjoy the game.”
There was also a bit of wrinkle in practice today as running back Royce Freeman worked with the offensive lineman.

Freshman quarterback Braxton Burmeister also made an impressive touchdown pass to Charles Nelson during an 11-on-11 drill.
