Local band Medium Troy has sold out every single WOW Hall show it has headlined since it started regularly playing shows in October 2006.
On Friday, March 19, the band plans to do it again, though this time it’s having a “Pay What You Want” Fan Appreciation Party charging as low as $2 and up to $20 dollars per ticket.
The event is hosted by the Community Center for the Performing Arts and University campus radio 88.1 FM KWVA. Other bands on the bill include Ruins of Ooah, Just People, Bazil Rathbone and Sea Bell.
The party is meant to give back to Medium Troy’s enthusiastic fan base, known as the Squirrel Crew.
“We definitely have a dedicated fan base that has been bringing in new people,” said Medium Troy guitarist and lead singer Jojo Ferreira.
However, members of the Squirrel Crew are not the only ones who are nuts about Medium Troy. The band has recently been awarded “Favorite Local Band” and “Best Musical Performance of 2009” for the WOW Hall Awards and “Best Band” by Eugene Weekly.
Medium Troy mixes a variety of musical influences from hip-hop, funk, dub, reggae and then some to create what they call “Bohemian Dub,” which also happens to be the name of their first album. Although “Bohemian Dub” has been a success for the band, a majority of its income comes from live shows.
“We’ve gone cardboard by now — maybe copper,” DJ Connor Sullivan said about selling albums.
While still supporting themselves with your garden-variety day jobs around Eugene, the band members plan to tour nationally this year, hoping to turn their passion into a profession.
The Fan Appreciation Party is only the first show on Medium Troy’s twelve-day tour along the West Coast. The band has been a hit in Eugene so far and hopes to expand its success away from home.
Doors open at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 19, and is open to all ages. “We’re just going to call it a party,” Ferreira said. “If it were a show, we would be charging people.”
