It was another successful weekend for the Oregon women’s softball team, despite having its final two games rained out at the San Diego Classic.
The Ducks beat Long Beach State 1-0 on Friday afternoon before falling 5-2 to San Diego State later that night.
Oregon was able to rebound against Cal Poly on Saturday with a 2-0 victory.
Sophomore pitcher Samantha Skillingstad nearly recorded her first complete-game shutout of the season against Long Beach State, striking out eight in her 6.2 innings of work. Junior lefty Brittany Rumfelt got the final out of the inning, earning her first save of the season and second of her career.
Unfortunately Oregon’s seven-game winning streak came to an end Friday night at the hands of San Diego State. The Ducks (14-5) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning with junior first baseman Monique Fuiava driving her second home run of the season over the center-field fence.
San Diego State responded with three runs on five hits in the third inning to go ahead 4-2, and eventually crossed the plate once more in the sixth. Freshman Jessica Moore struck out eight in her six innings of work in a losing effort.
“The game she pitched against San Diego State, it wasn’t her best game but she hung in there,” Oregon coach Mike White said. “It was good to see her come back out and pitch exceptionally well against Cal Poly.”
Moore was able to bounce back in a big way on Saturday, picking up her sixth win of the season, fifth complete game, while striking out a career-high 12 batters. It was the second time this season Moore (6-2) has struck out a dozen, good enough for the third-best single-game strikeout total for an Oregon player.
Six Ducks hit safely in that game, including four that tallied two hits each; sophomore shortstop Kelsey Chambers (2-for-3), freshmen Samantha Pappas (2-for-3) and Kaylan Howard (2-for-3), and senior Neena Bryant (2-for-3).
Oregon was then scheduled to play San Diego later that day, but after taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning the rain began to pour and USD officials canceled the game, as well as the Ducks’ contest with No. 21 Fresno State on Sunday morning.
“We’re very ready to get home,” White said. “Especially when we heard the weather was nicer in Eugene than it was down here.”
Oregon will get that opportunity for its first home games of the season when the team will host Boise State and North Dakota on Saturday, March 13 at Howe Field.
