After about an hour of deliberation Tuesday night, the Oregon Daily Emerald Board of Directors selected Nora Simon as next year’s editor in chief.
Simon is currently a copy editor at the Emerald. Photo editor Ivar Vong was the other candidate for the position.
“They’re two really talented people. The board hopes they will both continue to be involved in the organization,” Board Chair Melody Ward Leslie said.
Simon freelanced for the Emerald during her freshman year, 2007-2008. She spent her sophomore year at the University of Kansas, where she was the special sections editor at the University Daily Kansan. Simon transferred back to the University of Oregon in fall 2009 and joined the Emerald staff during winter term. She is a history and journalism major with a focus in news/editorial.
“While she hasn’t been here so long, she has a solid background working with reporters. Her orientation of a learning environment is what the paper needs,” Leslie said.
“I’m honored the board thinks I’m capable. I’m looking forward to working with the rest of the staff,” Simon said.
Simon will begin training for the position on May 1 and will step in as editor in chief in June.
“I want to bolster the paper’s image on campus and increase its value as a training ground, someplace (students) can get experience in the field,” Simon said.
