I’m frustrated with the lack of content regarding transportation in the YourVoice EMU Survey. There were several questions that asked “if there was more car parking, would students frequent the EMU and SRC more often?” However, it did not ask students if having more transportation options, more bicycle parking, or safer walking conditions would influence our ability and desire to go to the EMU and SRC.
Car parking is only a small part of our transportation problem. The EMU also suffers from insufficient bicycle parking. Infrequent bus service (especially late-night bus service), lack of bicycle parking, and high bicycle theft are also transportation barriers. Cars are not the only mode of transportation, and in asking only about car parking, the YourVoice Survey limits transportation solutions to be auto-centric.
Furthermore, bicycles and buses are not “alternative modes” of transportation for students. They are our first-choice options.
Ask bus riders what they want. Ask bicyclists what they want. Ask walkers what they want. I encourage all students to comment on the survey Web site, yourvoice.uoregon.edu, about what you want our campus to look like.
