It was reported late last night by The Oregonian’s John Hunt that sophomore forward Drew Wiley has chosen to transfer from the Oregon men’s basketball team.
Wiley is a 6-foot-7-inch forward who graduated from Springfield’s Thurston High School in 2008. As a senior at Thurston, he led the Colts to a third-place finish in the 5A OSAA State Tournament. Former Oregon coach Ernie Kent recruited Wiley, who was ranked by Scout.com as the 21st-best forward in the nation.
As a freshman, Wiley played in 24 games, and ranked second in the team in three-point percentage at 39 percent. His best performance of his career came in an 18-point performance against UCLA in Los Angeles on March 7, 2009. His career best in minutes was 30 against Washington State on Feb. 12, 2009.
This season, Wiley saw his numbers cut dramatically, and he didn’t play in the team’s last seven games. He played in 19 games (starting none), while averaging seven minutes a game. In those minutes he averaged 2.2 points a game. On the season, Wiley made 10 of 26
attempted three-pointers.
Wiley’s leaving means there are just two scholarship players from the state of Oregon on the Ducks’ roster — guard Garrett Sim and forward E.J. Singler. As Hunt mentioned in his article, besides Singler and Sim, there isn’t a player on the roster from the West Coast, and it’s an area the new head coach will have to tap into to be successful.
It is not yet known where Wiley will transfer, but his departure opens up a scholarship for the new coach to fill. As of now, the athletic department still has not chosen a coach, and even with the recruiting season underway, Oregon says it is in no rush to hire its next coach.
