The No. 1 men’s golf team arrived in Santee, Calif., for the Southwest Regional with high expectations. Through one round, those expectations have been met as the Ducks hold a share of the overall lead.
Oregon shot a 294 (six over par) on Thursday as a team, tying No. 12 UNLV, No. 24 Tennessee and No. 34 California for the tournament lead. Central Florida follows close behind in fifth with a score of 295 (seven over par).
Sophomore Daniel Miernicki paced the Ducks with an opening round 72 (even par) and is tied for seventh headed into Friday’s play. Given that Miernicki hails from nearby San Diego, his hot start is hardly surprising.
Junior Jack Dukeminier, freshly minted with an academic all-district distinction, followed with a 73 (one over par) and is currently tied for 12th place. Sophomore Eugene Wong, meanwhile, stands tied for 18th after an opening round 74 (two over par). Junior Isaiah Telles and sophomore Andrew Vijarro each shot a 75 (three over par) and are tied for 25th.
UNLV’s Eddie Olson holds a narrow individual lead in the tournament after an opening round 68 (four under par). New Mexico State’s Timothy Madigan is close behind with a 69 (three under par), and California’s Michael Weaver rounds out the top three with a 70 (two under par).
The second round begins today, and the tournament will wrap up on Saturday. The top five finishers will move on to the NCAA Championships in the first week of June.
