Special Sections Reporter

Special sections reporters must be able to work an average of 5-10 hours per week. Special sections reporters will cover feature and informative content for the Emerald’s 10-12 special sections throughout the year and will be specifically expected to:

Write approximately 20 inches of copy per week for supplements and special sections, as needed
Work with the special sections editor and fellow reporters to generate story ideas for upcoming sections
Pick up event coverage stories for the daily paper as needed or desired
Ensure that all writing is accurate, fair, clear and complete
Work with the special sections editor to improve writing
Become familiar with the rules of Associated Press and Emerald style
Coordinate with the design and photo desks to ensure as many stories as possible have a visual element with them by posting photo and graphic tips
Finish all writing on deadline
Attend required staff meetings and weekly desk meetings
Monitor the news daily to keep abreast of issues that need to be covered and see that no pertinent news is missed
Set individual goals each term to improve journalistic skills
