As if Oregon’s 3-0 regional wasn’t impressive enough, it was just one of six stellar performances by Pacific-10 teams in the 2010 NCAA Division I Softball Championship Tournament.
Six of the seven Pac-10 teams, No. 1 Washington, No. 4 Arizona, No. 6 UCLA, No. 10 Arizona State, No. 13 California and No. 20 Oregon, advanced from regional play to next weekend’s Super Regional play, as the conference proved that it is a softball powerhouse.
Washington, in the Seattle Regional it hosted, defeated North Dakota State 3-0, followed by two wins against North Carolina 1-0 and 2-1 to advance to the Super Regional against No. 14 Oklahoma. No. 5 UCLA dominated in similar fashion in the Los Angeles Regional, beating St. Mary’s 11-4, San Diego State 4-3 and Fresno State 7-2. The Bruins will play Louisiana-Lafayette in its Super Regional.
Arizona, the tenth seed, also hosted a regional, outscoring its opponents 25-6 over three games. The Wildcats beat Cornell and Hofstra twice to earn their trip to the next round against unseeded BYU. California followed suit in the Columbus Regional hosted by Ohio State, dispatching the Buckeyes twice over the weekend. The Golden Bears will play No. 6 seed Georgia in their Super Regional.
Finally, No. 13 seed Arizona State traveled all the way across the country to the Amherst
Regional to punch its ticket to the next round. The Sun Devils beat Boston University 6-1 in game one, followed by a 3-2 win over Long Island in game two. In the final game of the weekend, ASU won 9-1 and will face No. 4 seed Florida in the next round.
Overall, the Pac-10 was 19-2 in its regionals, with Stanford the only team not advancing to the next round. The Cardinal was 1-2 in the regional it hosted, with No. 16 seed Hawaii advancing to face No. 1 seed Alabama.
