Publisher, Oregon Daily Emerald
Reports to: Board of Directors
Type: Private Nonprofit 501(c)(3)
Application Review Begins: Jan. 7, 2011
Salary: $55,000 to $65,000
Bring your skills to a campus setting. We seek a dynamic, innovative Publisher for the independent student newspaper at the University of Oregon in Eugene, a town that’s consistently in the top ranks of national livability lists. The ideal candidate will arrive with business and advertising credentials, budgetary know-how and new media capabilities. Experience with interns or newspaper beginners would be a strong plus. So would a track record of community or non-profit involvement.
At the Emerald, you’ll lead a management team of professional department heads and collaborate with a student Editor in Chief who, like you, will report to the Board of Directors. You’ll be responsible for the day-to-day business operation, for articulating the values and vision for the organization, and for developing and carrying out the company’s long-term strategic plan.
The Oregon Daily Emerald is an independent nonprofit company operating a student-led news organization. It serves about 24,000 students and 4,450 employees at the University of Oregon in Eugene. Within about an hour’s drive are ocean beaches, lakes, rivers, forests, and the Cascade and Coast mountain ranges. Mild winters, long growing seasons and few drastic weather changes are characteristic. Eugene, also known as Track Town USA, is a highly livable university community that is home to the Hult Center for the Performing Arts and the Oregon Bach Festival.
The Oregon Daily Emerald Publishing Co., Inc. is committed to diversity, equal opportunity and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Applications will be reviewed as they come in. They must arrive by January 7, 2011, for full consideration. Final candidates will be subject to a criminal background check.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
Send a PDF attachment via e-mail to [email protected] including the following:
1. Cover letter addressing your qualifications and interest in the position.
2. Current resume.
3. Responses to the supplemental questions.
4. Names, addresses and phone numbers of three references.
In reviewing your application package, the board will be interested in aspects of your experience that reflect on: organizational management; budgeting; advertising sales; strategic planning; new media and digital technology; news-editorial operations; non-profit operations; fund-raising; alumni relations; ability to work with a board; and cross-generational skills relevant to working with a student newspaper staff.
SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONS:
Please provide short responses to the following:
1. Define your management style. Explain how you would apply it in this job. Address the reality that you will be operating with a mixed staff—a small cadre of full-time professionals with a strong commitment to their jobs but highly dependent upon part-time students with conflicting demands for their attention and time.
2. Describe your understanding of and experience with collegiate news organizations that have editorial autonomy.
3. Describe your experience in newspaper management and advertising sales.
