The Oregon baseball team kicked off the 2010 season in a big way, beating No. 4 Cal State Fullerton on Friday. Overall, the weekend was a success for the Ducks, with the team going 2-1.
Against the Titans on Friday, head coach George Horton was welcomed back at the school that he led to a national championship and a 490-212-1 record in 11 seasons. He received a plaque before the game started, and after a 54-minute rain delay, the Ducks won 7-3. The Ducks fell down 2-1 after the first inning, but used three runs in the sixth and another three in the eighth to put the Titans away.
Sophomore Tyler Anderson earned the win, going 5.2 innings and giving up three runs on four hits. Third baseman J.J. Altobelli went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
The Ducks followed up the upset with another strong performance on Saturday against the Long Beach State Dirtbags. Oregon outhit Long Beach 11-7 and cruised to a 6-2 win.
Sophomore KC Serna led four Ducks who had multi-hit performances, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Freshman Jack Marder went 2-for-3, sophomore Danny Pulfer went 2-for-4 and Altobelli added on his impressive performance from the day before with another two hits, two runs scored and two RBIs.
From the mound, Justin LaTempa started, giving up one run on three hits in 4.2 innings pitched. Reliver Alex Keudell follwed LaTempa for 3.1 innings and got the win, and closer Drew Gagnier finished the ninth for the Ducks.
On Sunday, a late comeback wasn’t enough as the Ducks fell to Pepperdine 11-7. The Ducks scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning, but 11 runs by Pepperdine in the first five innings were enough to withhold the charge. Eighteen players batted for the Ducks, and designated hitter Paul Eshleman had three hits to lead the team. Christian Jones was accredited with the loss in 3.1 innings, giving up eight hits and seven runs.
