The Oregon Ducks baseball team continued its strong start to the 2010 season, beating Loyola Marymount 12-3 on Monday.
Oregon (3-1) used a four-run seventh inning to break a 3-3 tie and run away with the game.
Zack Thornton started on the mound for the Ducks and he went 5.2 innings, giving up three runs on six hits. From the plate, second baseman Danny Pulfer led the way, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Shortstop KC Serna added two hits and two RBIs.
The Ducks started off the scoring in the second inning, getting two runs on a Serna double. LMU responded in the bottom of the fourth inning with three runs on a double and a triple. But the lead wouldn’t last long, as Marcus Piazzisi scored on an LMU error to tie the score at three.
From there, the Ducks and Lions remained tied until the seventh inning when Oregon burst open the game with the four runs. During the inning, Pulfer had a two-RBI single. For good measure, the Ducks added four more runs in the ninth inning, two of which came off a
Pulfer double.
Reliever Scott McGough came in for Thornton midway through the sixth inning and shut down the Lions for 2.1 innings, giving up one hit. Closer Drew Gagnier pitched the ninth, striking out two.
