The Oregon stunts and gymnastics team placed third at the Cheersport Nationals in Atlanta, Ga., on Sunday, following their second-place finish at the National Competitive Stunts and Tumbling Association Inaugural Meet two days earlier.
The team tallied a score of 840 points, trailing meet winner Louisville (867.9) and runner-up Maryland (846.6). The Terrapins also beat the Ducks at the NCSTAs by just over nine points, winning all but one of the five rounds.
In its largest competition of the year thus far at the Cheersports Nationals, Oregon beat out Fairmont State, North Carolina State, Quinnipiac, East Carolina, Ohio State, Georgia, Michigan State, McMaster University and Brock University.
Oregon recorded a first-day score of 413.6, and improved with a 429.4 showing the following day despite having three points subtracted for one tumbling fall. Louisville used the highest single routine score at the competition (437) to separate itself from the rest of the pack on the second day.
“If we had a weakness at all, it’s that we lacked some tumbling difficulty that the other two schools that placed above us had,” head coach Felecia Mulkey said. “But very clean routine; made quite an impact, I think. I think Oregon is on the map, I guess I’ll put it that way. I couldn’t be prouder of them.”
Oregon will next be in action on Sunday, when the team travels to Anaheim, Calif., for the USA West Coast Collegiate Meet to take on San Diego State University, USC, Azusa Pacific, Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara.
