The Oregon women’s basketball team improved its record to 2-0 by defeating Long Beach State 88-76 Friday.
The Ducks squeezed out a win against the 49ers despite an off shooting night. Oregon hit only 32.6 percent from the floor and 65.4 percent from the free-throw line.
A solid first half in which the Ducks outscored the 49ers 47-27 paved the way for Oregon’s victory.
Guard Nia Jackson led the Ducks in scoring with 21 points on 6-for-13 shooting. Jasmin Holliday chipped in 17, Ashley Buis added 15, and Deanna Weaver scored 11. Forward Amanda Johnson, the leading scorer in the Ducks’ season opener against Western Oregon, added 10 points.
Brandi Henton led Long Beach State in scoring with 21 and Amanda Sims added 19 points on 8-for-12 shooting for the 49ers.
Although Holliday and Weaver combined to pull down 25 rebounds, Oregon was out-rebounded 66-55 by Long Beach State.
However, the Ducks only committed 16 turnovers to the 49ers’ 31, and had 21 more field-goal attempts than Long Beach State.
Oregon returns to action Monday night when they travel north to take on the Portland Pilots at home. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
