The Oregon women’s basketball team won the Oregon Invitational tournament this weekend, but suffered its first loss of the season in the process.
The Ducks improved their overall record to 5-1, after wins over Idaho and Sacramento State and a narrow loss to Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday. Each game was played at McArthur Court.
Oregon started the weekend off well, with a 72-48 victory over Idaho on Friday. The two teams traded baskets in a low-scoring first half that saw Oregon gain a 30-22 advantage before the Ducks pulled away in the contest’s latter stages. Amanda Johnson led Oregon in scoring with 20 points on 9 for 16 shooting while true freshman Deanna Weaver added 13. All 14 of the healthy players on Oregon’s roster saw game action.
As a team, the Ducks shot 34.5 percent from the field to the Vandals’ 33.3 percent, and forced 30 Idaho turnovers. No player on Idaho’s roster scored in double figures.
Oregon’s pressure defense wasn’t as effective the next day in an 82-78 loss to Cal State Bakersfield Saturday afternoon. After trailing the Roadrunners 34-33 at halftime, the Ducks went on a 25-8 run to being to second half to take what seemed to be a commanding 58-42 lead.
But Cal State Bakersfield came storming back, outscoring Oregon 40-20 the rest of the way to notch the victory. Oregon lost despite a season-high 23 points from point guard Nia Jackson on 7 for 15 shooting, and a double-double (29 points and 14 rebounds) from Johnson.
Guard Amber Williams led Cal State Bakersfield with 18 points and Kirstine Herman added 15 for the Roadrunners. For the game, Cal State Bakersfield shot 40.7 percent from the field to Oregon’s 34.2 percent. Oregon did out-rebound Cal State Bakersfield 49-45 but were only plus-five in turnover margin.
The Ducks were able to punctuate the weekend with a 110-60 victory over Sacramento State in the tournament finale Sunday. Oregon hit 12 three-pointers in the effort, and out-rebounded the overmatched Hornets 75-61.
Once again, all 14 healthy Oregon players saw action, and the Ducks received widespread offensive contributions as a result. Reserve guard Kristi Fallin led the team in scoring with 26 points, but five Ducks scored in double figures and every active player scored at least a point. Forward Kylie Kuhns led the Hornets with 14 points.
The Ducks are scheduled to return to action Friday when they travel to Idaho to face Boise State. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
