An attempted armed robbery at a Dutch Bros. coffee kiosk led to an exchange of gunfire with at least two different weapons used and the death of one of the alleged robbers Wednesday.
According to press releases from both the Eugene Police Department and Dutch Bros., the attempted robbery occurred at about 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Dutch Bros. location at 2115 Franklin Blvd., across the street from the University.
Two men, at least one with a firearm, attempted to rob one of the baristas at the location. What ensued is not entirely clear, and both Dutch Bros. and the EPD have declined to clarify events citing an ongoing investigation. The barista has been identified as a white male in his 20s, but his name and whether or not he was the only employee in the kiosk at the time of the robbery has not been released.
Press releases state that an exchange of gunfire occurred and EPD spokesperson Melinda McLaughlin said that the exchange involved at least two weapons. The exact number of weapons involved and whether or not they belonged to the two robbers or the barista has not been ascertained. However, reports do make clear that the barista did shoot and kill one the suspected robbers.
The EPD identified the dead suspected assailant as 27-year-old Sirus Combs of Eugene. McLaughlin said that Combs had an extensive criminal history and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crime. McLaughlin declined to discuss further specifics of the case because of what she cited as on ongoing investigation, but did say that the EPD is still looking for the second man who may have been an accomplice to Combs. The man’s name has not been released, but he has been identified as a white male in his 20s or 30s, about 5-foot-10-inches tall, with blond hair.
Dutch Bros. spokesperson Angie Galimanis said the coffee franchise has an official no-weapons policy for its employees, but would not comment if the weapon used in the exchange actually belonged to the employee in question or whether it was one of the alleged robbers’ firearm.
“For our baristas and owners, we have a no-firearms policy on them,” Galimanis said. “It’s unclear if our employee had a firearm, or if he didn’t have a firearm, or what.”
