True to the slogan of “The Social Network,” Mark Zuckerberg finds out that you can’t make 500 million friends without making a few enemies along the way.
Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) is a programming genius who’s obsessed with getting into exclusive clubs at Harvard University.
Out of a fit of grief, he creates a small website called www.facesmash.com, where site visitors rate the hotness of girls in the clubs at Harvard.
His site crashes the Harvard servers and the website receives 200,000 hits in one hour at 4 a.m.
Needless to say, www.facesmash.com creates controversy and anger among the clubs and the university, but it also sparks interest from a few club members looking to use Zuckerberg’s skills. Zuckerberg takes this interest as a steppingstone to create a website called www.thefacebook.com.
In efforts to make Facebook a million-dollar company, Zuckerberg meets the charismatic creator of Napster, Sean Parker (Justin Timberlake), who leads him to success but tears him apart from his one true friend, Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield).
The acting in the film is impressive and believable. All the characters have purpose and interests that drive the film to its conclusion.
Timberlake is surprisingly good at being cutthroat and cunning. Garfield plays the role of Zuckerberg’s best friend and chief financial officer of Facebook with a varying degree of passion that adds to the conflict between friends and rivals in the film.
The plot of the film had a lot to be desired at the end with little actual resolution, but the overall message of the film was fulfilled.
The Social Network delves into friendship, love, rivalry and businesses, making this film a dramatic look at success.
The bottom line: The film was worth the admission, and is enjoyable and entertaining. Though not extremely exciting, The Social Network is intellectually stimulating.
If you’re looking for a good movie to get into this fall, I would suggest seeing this film.
