School officials announced Tuesday that the construction of a two-story bouncy house will begin in early December. The Department of Buildings and Various University Constructions set the building site to 14th Avenue and Alder Street — just over the Prince Lucien Campbell parking lot.
“We want to give the University and its students something they’ll really enjoy,” Buildings and Other Various University Constructions Director Tom Walters said.
According to a press release, construction of the bouncy house will take anywhere from one week to 10 years. Units will be set up in all available parking lots, and Walters thinks it is likely that any additional parking spots on the streets will be held for workers and food stands.
The bouncy house will cover a little over 1,000 square feet, and will include a state-of-the-art bouncing system and accessories such as 10-foot slides, a mini-ball pit and a full cafe on the second floor. The full blueprint of the house also shows three lounges and a small fitness center, in which Walters hopes all the equipment will be made out of bouncy material.
Many students are upset about the decrease in parking and the allocation of student incidental fee money, but the University seems to be ignoring complaints.
“Bouncy exercise equipment?” Walters said. “Wouldn’t that be awesome!?”
Students will be allowed full access with their identification cards, and memberships will be offered to the community at discount prices. The construction of the house itself is estimated to cost just under $21 million, possibly more if Walters can find more investors.
A name for the bouncy house has yet to be determined. Walters said the University will decide once they find a donor who gives them a large enough contribution.
“It’s either we name it after a significant investor, or we just call it Uncle Phil’s Fun Time Bouncy House,” said Walters. “I kind of hope it’s that one.”
