ASUO Sen. Carina Miller resigned during winter break, giving no specific reason in her letter of resignation addressed to the Senate.
The short letter she sent in an e-mail dated Dec. 20 reads: “Due to various reasons, I must resign from Senate, effective immediately. I’ve enjoyed working with everyone. I’m sorry for any and all inconvenience this may cause.”
Miller said she did not write out her reasons in the letter because she didn’t want to delve into them.
“Really I’m resigning for every reason,” Miller said. “My grades have taken a big hit; my finances have taken a big hit. It’s taken up a lot of my life.”
She went on to say that her time was better spent working within organizations in the Native American community, with which she has previously been involved.
“I’m not going to be as helpful as I’d like to be, the ASUO is not the only place where you can do work, and my time is up,” she said.
Miller is the sixth senator to resign this year, and Gower emphasized the importance of knowing the time commitment required of the job.
“When students take on the obligation to serve student government, they need to be aware of the time commitment, both with their own personal schedule and the schedule of the ASUO,” he said.
Gower said Miller’s resignation will be a loss to the ASUO.
“We’re definitely losing an extremely valuable member of Senate,” he said. “I hope we can readily replace her, but the shoes of Carina Miller will be very hard to fill.”
