I am very proud of the UO football team for winning the Pacific-10 Conference title this year and playing in the Rose Bowl. On Jan. 1, a good football team beat us and we have to accept that.
But I would like for us to learn one lesson from the Buckeyes. They are a proud institution with tradition. Their school colors are scarlet and gray, and they show their colors as a team. The players, the fans and the coach wear the colors.
The University is a proud institution with an identity problem. Our colors are green and yellow. Why does the athletic department dress our players in white, black, pink, gray, about six shades of yellow and every shade of green imaginable. I wish the athletic department or student body would select one shade of yellow and one shade of green and dress the teams in uniforms that consist at least 50 percent of one or both of these colors. A good choice would be the colors worn by the Duck mascot.
The fans, of course, are free to wear whatever they wish. No wonder they come to the game as individuals when the team cannot honor our traditional colors. The University can encourage wearing school colors by only licensing garments colored at least 50 percent green and/or yellow. Let’s show our spirit by coloring the stands green and yellow.
