University Senate President Peter Gilkey resigned abruptly last week, leaving Vice President Nathan Tublitz to fill the position.
In an e-mail issued shortly after Wednesday’s University Senate meeting, Gilkey simply wrote:
“I am resigning effective 18:00 Wednesday 13 January 2010 as UO Senate President, as UO Senate Webmaster and as UO Assembly Webmaster.”
Gilkey declined to comment on his resignation.
Tublitz, a professor of biology, previously served as Senate president in the 2001-02 academic year and said he had been involved in the University Senate for about 10 to 15 years.
Tublitz was elected as vice president last year by one vote. The results of the contentious election were originally dismissed on grounds that not enough senators were present, but Tublitz was later confirmed as vice president.
In the past, Tublitz has been an outspoken critic of the University administration and an advocate for greater faculty power in decision-making.
Tublitz said the biggest issue facing the Senate was “university governance and developing a strong system of governing the university, which starts with faculty governance, but also includes input from other members of the campus community.”
“We have a very unusual university senate system here,” Tublitz said. “It’s not common to have such a diverse group, but I think it’s a very laudable system that we need to sustain and encourage.”
Tublitz declined to comment on Gilkey’s resignation beyond giving a brief farewell.
“I’m sorry to see Peter resign,” Tublitz said. “He has been a strong contributor to campus governance, and he will be missed.”
