Freshman forward Jamil Wilson has worked his way into a starting role for the Oregon men’s basketball team (10-7, 2-3 Pac-10) and has shown glimpses of being a stellar all-around athlete this season. He, fellow freshman E.J. Singler and sophomore Michael Dunigan are the only players having started all five Pacific-10 Conference games for Ernie Kent’s squad. Wilson’s 6-foot-7-inch frame has made him difficult for most guards to defend, and he also ranks second on the team in blocks (10) and third in total rebounding (67).
Wilson is from Racine, Wis., and by the end of his senior year, he was the nation’s No. 31 ranked recruit, according to ESPNU. He averaged 21.2 points, 10.2 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 2.8 blocks and 1.4 steals per game his senior year.
The Oregon Daily Emerald caught up with Wilson before practice last week and got a chance to go over some things outside of basketball. This is what he had to say.
Oregon Daily Emerald: So, what’s your major? I know you’re a freshman, but have you decided yet?
Jamil Wilson: I haven’t really decided a major. I think I few courses are pretty interesting that I might try to invest in.
ODE: Four years from now, down the road, where do you see yourself?
JW: If not the NBA, hopefully owning my own business, or just working a job that pays good money in this economy.
ODE: Is that the ultimate goal though at this point, the NBA?
JW: Yeah, definitely so.
ODE: So have you made it over to the new student-athlete center over on Franklin?
JW: I have.
ODE: What’s that like? Pretty nice, I’m assuming?
JW: It’s anything an athlete could ask for. I know a lot of students don’t like homework, especially athletes, but you go into a building like that with the facilities and everything you have is just over there for your uses.
ODE: You’re in the dorms this year then, right?
JW: Yeah, chillin’ in Barnhart.
ODE: How are you liking that?
JW: I mean, it’s pretty nice. I just met everyone on my floor for the first time like two days ago.
ODE: Is your roommate on the basketball team, too?
JW: Yeah, I’m rooming with E.J. (Singler).
ODE: How’s that?
JW: It’s just funny all day. It’s 24/7 comedy.
ODE: Nice. What kind of music are you into these days?
JW: Anywhere from hip-hop to R&B. I do some old school here and there with my Dad, but just the normal stuff.
ODE: What about movies? Seen “Avatar” yet?
JW: Seen “Avatar.” We went and saw it as a team, it was pretty intense.
ODE: How about football? Do you follow football much?
JW: Yeah, the Colts are my favorite team. It’s kind of weird but I’m a Peyton Manning fan.
ODE: You got them in the Super Bowl then?
JW: Of course, they lost a couple at the end but I think they’ll shape it up.
