National Geographic
National Geographic was founded Jan. 27, 1888. Originally formed as National Geographic Magazine by a group of 33 explorers and scientists, it pioneered the use of photographs to tell stories.
Challenger explosion
The NASA space shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after launch into its 10th mission on Jan 28, 1986. All seven astronauts lost their lives. Challenger, designated Orbital Vehicle 099 and named after the HMS Challenger, was NASA’s second space shuttle to be put into service. The accident led to a two-and-a-half year grounding of the space shuttle fleet.
