ASUO Senate approved spending $3,182 in surplus funds Wednesday to the Belegarth Medieval Combat Society to buy new foam-padded weapons to perform mock battles.
“I’ve never heard a request where the answer is more weapons,” Senate President Nick Gower said.
According to society president Alli Cramer, the Belegarth Medieval Combat Society was turned down for funding by Club Sports because the group did not meet the goals of Club Sports, nor did it meet the Programs Finance Committee deadline to be considered for budget season.
“I’m feeling extremely elated,” Cramer, whose warrior name is Rocca, said.
Cramer, who has been present at previous surplus requests, said the process she
witnessed before Wednesday’s meeting seemed much more difficult and stressful.
“I did not expect to get the request that smoothly,” she said.
After being awarded the request, the medieval-dressed audience erupted in applause.
Senators were pleased to hear that the society planned to hold events with Greek Life, residence halls and other groups on campus.
Senate also unanimously voted Nolan Gary to the Elections Coordinator position.
“I’ve never seen someone come in here before with a better knowledge of what they’re getting themselves into,” Sen. Hailey Sheldon said.
Gary’s resume stuck out to Sheldon, most notably his Eagle Scout status.
“Not many transfer students get this opportunity,” Gary said. “I’m sure you’re wondering why anyone in the world would want this position, and the answer is that nothing worth fighting for is going to be easy.”
He went on to say that he is ready to start working.
“Obviously I don’t have as much time as I would like, but I’m going to use the time we have,” he said. “I know it’s going to be challenging, and I’m happy to take that challenge.”
Senate also heard the Student Aid and Financial Responsibility Act Resolution, which
Senate decided to postpone indefinitely based on the overall lack of understanding of the repercussions of the bill, deciding to wait until more information was presented to make an informed decision.
“I don’t think it’s appropriate to do anything with this right now,” Sen. Sandy Weintraub said in the direction of the presenters of the resolution, ASUO Vice President Getachew Kassa and Multicultural Advocate Diego Hernandez. “Frankly I don’t think that what you’re telling me is an understanding of what the bill does. We don’t have any business passing the resolution.”
Senate also heard a special request by the ASUO Women’s Center to attend the Creative Change Conference in Dallas, Texas, for the amount of $108. The amount of the request was originally $758 and was then changed when Sen. Paige Libadisos pointed out that only one hotel room was needed.
