After being held scoreless in all but one inning during Saturday’s loss, Oregon baseball’s bats were alive on Sunday as the Ducks defeated the Indiana State Sycamores 8-5 to conclude the Marucci Desert Classic.
Jakob Goldfarb continued his impressive play to start the season, hitting two home runs on Sunday. He completed the Marucci Desert Classic 6-of-11 with seven RBIs and three home runs.
Spencer Steer launched a two-run home run in the first inning put away Oregon’s offensive woes from the day before. Oregon needed every run they could get offensively, as starter James Acuna had a rough outing. He lasted just four innings, surrendering five runs (four earned), four hits and two strikeouts.
In the first inning, the Sycamores cut the lead in half on a wild pitch, and later in the inning Roberto Enriquez hit a two-run triple to give the Sycamores a 3-2 lead. However, a rare balk call allowed Kenyon Yovan to tie the game in the top of the second, but the tie was quickly broken as the Sycamores regained the lead on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning.
The lead was extended in the fourth when Enriquez picked up his third RBI of the day. That was the last run the Sycamores scored in the game. The Ducks scored runs in four straight innings to put the game away.
First baseman Gabe Matthews, who had a perfect 4-of-4 day, cut the Sycamore lead to one in the fifth inning with an RBI-single. After Goldfarb tied it in the sixth inning with a solo home run they each hit home runs in the seventh to put the game away. Matthews’ two-run shot scored Steer to give Oregon the two-run lead, and Goldfarb punctuated his weekend with a solo shot to give the game its final margin.
Freshman pitcher Kolby Somers made his debut and gave up just three hits and no runs in 1.2 innings. Parker Kelly and Yovan combined for 3.2 innings of one-hit baseball to put the game away.
Next up for the Ducks is the first game in the state of Oregon on Wednesday. The team heads to Portland to play the Pilots at 6 p.m.
